31 Days of Halloween: Day #15 – My Top 10 Horror Villains

Hello friends, and welcome to the 31 Days of Halloween!

Halloween Quote
“” — Jack Prelutsky, “It’s Halloween”

It’s Day 15 of the series, and today, I’m sharing some favorite horror movie villains. Let’s face it—villains make the movie, and if they are good, they’re memorable. The ones that have you questioning, could I really survive in their movie?

My Top 10 Horror Villains

#10 – Chucky
Before Annabelle of the “Conjuring” movie series, there was another terrifying doll. Chucky (a “Good Guy” doll), possessed by the soul of Charles Lee Ray (a dying serial killer), transfers his consciousness into a popular kids’ doll using voodoo. Chucky proves that even the most innocuous childhood toys can become vessels of terror when imbued with evil intent. (Childs Play)

#9 – Annie Wilkes
Annie Wilkes (played by Kathy Bates) is a superfan so obsessed with Paul Sheldon (played by James Caan), a romance novelist character (Misery), that she breaks his legs and leaves him chained to a bed. Her obsession is unsettling, and she confuses reality with the book’s fictional characters, so much so that she holds him hostage to rewrite the ending of one of her favorite characters. (Misery)

#8 – Annabelle
Annabelle is a powerful demonic entity that is latched onto a doll to torment its owners. It was one of the artifacts taken by demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren during one of their missions. It is considered the most dangerous and powerful, and it has a weird habit of wandering around unseen. (Annabelle)

#7 – Dracula
Count Dracula has become universally recognized as one of the most famous fictional characters and icons of horror fiction. He is the archetype of all vampires. He has inspired countless adaptations over the decades, with many straying far from his original depiction in the novel. Dracula is one of the most alluring and resilient villains, continuing to invoke fear and fascinate the masses.

#6 – Samara
Samara Morgan (now a ghost) was once a child gifted with the psychic ability known as Nensha, which is the ability to burn images onto surfaces, minds, and skins. As she could not control this ability, Samara would affect those around her, including her adoptive mother, Anna. This would lead Anna to trap Samara in a well.  Samara would survive for seven days. (The Ring)

#5 – Pennywise
Pennywise, also known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is the titular antagonist in Stephen King’s (original) 1986 horror novel.  Played by Tim Curry in 1986 and Bill Skarsgard in 2017.  The origins are a supernatural alien creature who landed on Earth roughly in the 16th century—preying on children every 27 years, malforming itself into their worst fears. Its true form is never known or seen, but it mainly takes the form of a clown due to the general universal fear of clowns and its preference.  (It)

#4 – Jason Voorhees
Jason Voorhees is a character from the Friday the 13th series. He first appeared in the series as the young son of camp cook-turned-killer Mrs. Voorhees. Jason was an almost completely silent, undead, and seemingly unstoppable killing machine. He was an iconic madman who haunts Camp Crystal Lake and the surrounding area, driven to slaughter anyone he encounters by a burning need to avenge the death of his beloved mother. (Friday the 13th)

#3 – Ghostface
Ghostface (named after the mask) is the main antagonist of the Scream film series. Roger L. Jackson voices his identity in all appearances. The Ghostface persona remains the same throughout the Scream series, featuring a black hood and cloak with a jagged base and a white rubber mask resembling a ghost with an anguished expression. Ghostface has been a different killer throughout the Scream franchise, which makes whoever wears the costume more diabolical, as is human nature. (Scream)

#2 – Michael Myers
Michael Myers is a character from the slasher film series Halloween. He first appears in 1978 in John Carpenter’s Halloween as a young boy who murders his elder sister, Judith Myers. Fifteen years later, he returns home to Haddonfield, Illinois, to murder more teenagers. With his blank white mask and dark jumpsuit, Michael represents a faceless and unstoppable evil. The dread that builds around each of Myers’s kills leaves viewers on edge long after they’ve left the theater. (Halloween)

#1 – Freddy Kruger
Fred Kruger was a serial child killer in life and in death, an evil spirit who kills his victims in their dreams, often by torturing them to death, having gotten his powers from the three original Dream Demons. Freddy’s grotesquely disfigured face, concealed under a wide-brimmed fedora and signature razor-blade glove, serves as the haunting symbols of this sinister monster. He is unrelenting in his pursuit of terrorizing those he targets, making it impossible for them to find solace even in their slumber. (A Nightmare On Elm Street)
