Summer Movie Wrap: The Movies I’ve Seen So Far
Hello, gorgeous…how are you? Welcome to the blog today.
“The basis of all human fears, he thought. A closed door, slightly ajar.” ― Stephen King, “Salem’s Lot”
Friends, I hope everyone is doing well and feeling good. Remember to stay hydrated, take moments to be still, get plenty of rest, and don’t forget your greens.
A few months ago, I posted about 15 new movies I can’t wait to see. Movies have been few and far between (for me), so I’ve seen six so far. The only reason for the rest is availability and my refusal to pay $19.99 to rent a movie, which I don’t know if it’s good, bad, or just plain terrible. But for the six I’ve seen, I’d like to share my take on them.
About: A live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. Rated: R As horror movies go, this was a “scary movie,” and it was entertaining (to me) for that reason. I liked that it compared this “Late Night” talk show to Johnny Carson’s for ratings, and all the imagery from the 1970s was fantastic. However, the ending felt rushed, and many questions were left unanswered. I would probably watch it again and do a deep dive because I might have missed something. |

About: When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death. Rated: R What to say about this one? It wasn’t good at all and fubbed most of what’s true about Tarot. Yes, it’s for entertainment, but all the characters make stupid decisions. I feel like it was a movie rushed out to the masses. |
About: After a group of criminals kidnaps the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. Rated: R This movie is in that dark comedy gray space of horror but it is violent. Usually, anything with vampires, unless you’re looking at Twilight, is violent, as killing said vampire is the objective. Abigail is no exception. The plot is simple: Kidnap the girl for money, but they get more than they bargained for. I found this really entertaining and not too heavy. I give this monster movie a C+. |

About: When the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. Rated: PG-13 I had really high hopes for this movie because I love the franchise. I saw it during my flight to Atlanta, and I was really disappointed. It missed all the marks for me, as I tried to make it make sense. I loved that we are still bringing back the original characters from the movie. Paul Rudd is hilarious, and it seemed like it would be good because I loved the one before it (Ghostbusters Afterlife); however, this one didn’t do it for me. |
About: Cecilia, a woman of devout faith, is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside, where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent. But it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets. Rated: R Where do I begin? I think there was an uptick in jumping on the bandwagon with the release of the First Omen. However, that’s just an excuse because the original concept for this movie was created in 2014. It’s not a complete copycat, but both stories have several similarities. One is solid, and this one missed the mark. Some scenes move slowly, leaving you to wonder when said “thing” was happening, after which it’s more science-based than faith-based. With that, this is another no for me. |

About: A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church but encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. Rated: R This is a prequel that was done right. It’s creepy, yes, set in 1971, five years before the original Omen. This movie also does a great job of making you think about the mark and who in the church might be responsible. The premise of why the church does what it does blew my mind, but it boils down to people not having faith in the church or its principles and turning to other things to compensate. It’s a great story that ends right where the Omen that came out in 1976 would begin. I’m waiting to see what will be added to this franchise because The Omen II was just ok. III was terrible, and I didn’t even know there was a fourth and there was a remake in 2006, but I didn’t even both with that. Hey…don’t mess with the original. LOL |
What’s left on my list? There are still quite a few …Sting, The Fall Guy, Bad Boys ~ Ride or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One, The Watchers, Maxxxine, Longlegs, and The Crow. I don’t count Beetlejuice because it doesn’t come out until September.
I know my list is mostly horror, but I enjoy other genres which I’ll get to … eventually. What movies did you see this summer? Let me know in the comments.
Thanks so much for stopping by today. I appreciate every visit and follow. See ya next time! — Peace
