Bingeworthy Documentaries

It seems that everyone [at some point] is binging something … be it on network television + or a streaming service … there is always something to keep us entertained. I am a documentary junkie. They can be moving + inspiring + terrifying + and gut wrenching all at the same time. To take one subject and push the boundaries beyond what we know + and our limits of understanding is excellent. This type of TV always pushes me to think outside the box at what I’ve seen + or experienced.

Here are a few that I go back to and re-watch + but I warn you … some are not for the faint of heart. I like crime + murder mysteries + and horror which isn’t for everyone. I’ve started some docs that are crime stories + and stopped by the 3rd episode because it got “too” real for me … but that’s just one side. I also love pop culture + music + and so many more.

Beyond Clueless + Streaming on Amazon
BACKSTORY: Beyond Clueless is a dizzying journey into the mind, body and soul of the teen movie, as seen through the eyes of over 200 modern coming-of-age classics.

This look into teen movies brought back several memories of what I was wearing + doing + and feeling at the time these premiered. They were made a little differently back then + and while my background was completely different from most of what these movies represented + I can related to the confused feelings + and the isolation that some teenagers felt.

Never Sleep Again:  The Elm Street Legacy + Streaming on Amazon
BACKSTORY: Explore the origins of “dream demon” Freddy Krueger in this award-winning documentary that takes you behind the scenes of the most frightening and imaginative horror franchise in motion picture history!

When Freddy came on the scene I was quite young + [telling my age here which is a whole other post…lol] but I never watched any of them [because I was chicken shit] until an acquaintance dragged me out to see the 3rd installment [NOES: Dream Warriors]. Nightmare on Elm Street was my introduction to horror movies + and I loved reliving stories from the cast + and how this movie affected those that watched it.

Dirty Money + Streaming on Netflix
BACKSTORY: A Netflix Original Series documenting various stories about exposing the greed, corruption, and crime spreading through the global economy.

Talk about eye-opening. This is one documentary that left me speechless. It also shows how greed can affect people in the most heinous ways. From prescription drugs to payday loans + and even maple syrup + this documentary has a lot to say about just how far people will go make the “all-mighty” dollar.

The Keepers + Streaming on Netflix
BACKSTORY: A deep dive into the unsolved murder of a nun and the mysteries that surround her death decades later.

I wont give too much away + but what started out as a simple murder mystery turned into something much deeper + and more sinister. WARNING!!! if you don’t like crime stories … this one may not be for you. It’s seven episodes + and with each one I wanted to know a bit more.

What Happened? Miss Simone + Streaming on Netflix
BACKSTORY: A documentary about the life and legend Nina Simone, an American singer, pianist, and civil rights activist labeled the “High Priestess of Soul.”

This was a complete history lesson [for me] into music + and culture. It also shows what happens in the mind of one of the greatest artist of that time.  Hearing the struggle with her race + and identity as a married woman and artist … my eyes were opened.  I was blown away.

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my blog … don’t forget to “like” + “comment” + and follow … as always … Know Thyself. —

  1. I’d like to checkout Dirty Money, maybe Never sleep again (I’d have to pray before and after watching it.) I’m a scaredy-cats with horror movies and reality documentaries. I seriously can’t sleep by myself after watching these shows. But sometimes truth is necessary because they are things happening in our world.
